HOLIDAY, by GERTRUDE LEE WHEELER First Line: One day I chose to be queen of the may Last Line: For to each child god gives one holiday. | |||
One day I chose to be Queen of the May, My leaden world turned golden and gay. I loosed the bond that held me tight, I danced with unalloyed delight. With trembling hands I seized the cup of bliss And drained its dregs with one long rapturous kiss. I can't recall one single word I said; I know not where my buoyant feet were led. But if I yielded to this lure, The path was straight, the kiss was pure. No scar remains from this glad day in May, For to each child God gives one holiday. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...SONNETS FROM THE PORTUGUESE: 39 by ELIZABETH BARRETT BROWNING FOURTH BOOK OF AIRS: SONG 18 by THOMAS CAMPION AN ODE UPON A QUESTION WHETHER LOVE SHOULD CONTINUE FOREVER by EDWARD HERBERT THE HEATHEN PASS-EE by ARTHUR CLEMENT HILTON HAIL COLUMBIA by JOSEPH HOPKINSON A SHROPSHIRE LAD: 50 by ALFRED EDWARD HOUSMAN ROLL-CALL by NATHANIEL GRAHAM SHEPHERD |
