Subject(s): April; Happiness; Pleasure; Spring; Joy; Delight

An April day and summer in the air,
The flit of busy wings, a mellow call
From bough to bough: the tulips growing tall
In grasses silken soft; and everywhere
An eager, breathless waiting: sudden flare
Of white magnolia blossoms where a wall
Makes weathered background patterned with the scrawl
Of ivy vines close-linked like tangled hair.

An April day and summer in my blood,
A riotous delirium of joy
Quick swelling into overwhelming flood
Of all-pervading pleasure that in vain
The gods themselves would venture to destroy,
For April leads the summer back again.
