TO MY MOTHER, by HELEN WIDOFF First Line: Visible through an avalanche of tears Last Line: To find the lost sun that had once shone. Subject(s): Dreams; Hallucinations And Illusions; Memory; Nightmares | ||||||||
Visible through an avalanche of tears, Your vision on the horizon appears; The veil of silence, melting away, Bringing to life our yester-day. Again I see your ethereal face, Feel once more your warm embrace, That fills my heart with ecstasy; Your memory, forever a reality. This mythical God, where does He dwell, Whose legends of miracles and delayed farewell Are carried by wind throughout the night, Who wildly boasts the might is right; The power of life within his hands, To sever life's threads at His command -- The echo of prayers, to backward dart To torment the bruised and aching heart? Mortals clothe life in dress of tinsel, In a symphony of the tinkling bell Created a dream, fantastic, alluring, To make life livable and enduring -- And christened this dream, in life's confusion, "Happiness," in reality but an illusion, So the spirit seeks solace, onward alone To find the lost sun that had once shone. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...VARIATIONS: 14 by CONRAD AIKEN VARIATIONS: 18 by CONRAD AIKEN LIVE IT THROUGH by DAVID IGNATOW A DREAM OF GAMES by JOSEPHINE JACOBSEN THE DREAM OF WAKING by RANDALL JARRELL APOLOGY FOR BAD DREAMS by ROBINSON JEFFERS GIVE YOUR WISH LIGHT by ROBINSON JEFFERS NEW YEAR'S DAWN - BROADWAY by SARA TEASDALE |
