SPONGE FISHERS, by ALMA ADAMS WILEY First Line: Sponge fishers of crete went down to the sea Last Line: Of the hardy and the brave. Subject(s): Fish & Fishing; Sea; Sponges; Ocean | ||||||||
Sponge fishers of Crete went down to the sea A thousand years in the past, And their race in Tarpon Springs today Where the Anclote sinks in the Gulf's white spray Such ancient anchors cast. Swarthy and brown, with the tools of toil And the rover's freedom from care, They drop to the stillest deeps below Where the coral builds and the sponges grow, With a coil of rope to spare. Bold are the men who go down to the sea These plunderers of the wave, But the sea itself is cunning and old, And more than the ships its maw can hold Of the hardy and the brave. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...HALL OF OCEAN LIFE by JOHN HOLLANDER JULY FOURTH BY THE OCEAN by ROBINSON JEFFERS BOATS IN A FOG by ROBINSON JEFFERS CONTINENT'S END by ROBINSON JEFFERS THE FIGUREHEAD by LEONIE ADAMS THE LINCOLN MEMORIAL by ALMA ADAMS WILEY |
