ON HER WEDDING DAY, by MONICA WILLIAMS First Line: If I could wish for you one wish today Last Line: More beautiful than in your wedding dress. Subject(s): Marriage; Weddings; Husbands; Wives | ||||||||
If I could wish for you one wish today That would in future years great joy unfold, I would desire that you should learn to pray Aright, the prayer that Jesus taught of old -- I would not ask from pain you might be free, Or wealth or fame to bless you through the years; I would not seek that you may still love me Though love unloosed might drench my heart with tears. For prayer alone can bring you all I ask -- A love that understands and binds each heart, A strength to grace and mould each common task And make them in your life the nobler part, So then you will become through toil and stress More beautiful than in your wedding dress. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A BLESSING FOR A WEDDING by JANE HIRSHFIELD A SUITE FOR MARRIAGE by DAVID IGNATOW ADVICE TO HER SON ON MARRIAGE by MARY BARBER THE RABBI'S SON-IN-LAW by SABINE BARING-GOULD KISSING AGAIN by DORIANNE LAUX A TIME PAST by DENISE LEVERTOV |
