LAMENT, by
First Line: The rain falls softly on my window panes
Last Line: I would rather now be ... Dead!
Subject(s): Absence; Separation; Isolation

The rain falls softly on my window panes,
And in the spacious court below,
My heart is heavy as with chains.
This soul of mine is filled with woe.

Why must I sit here all alone,
While thou art fancy free, and far away.
Though thy love to me had never been shown,
Come back, my love, I say.

Fair one, child of fate,
Beautious one, beloved of the gods.
Return sweet, ere it is too late,
'Fore death calls me to the sods.

Hold me once again in fond embrace.
Keep me thus, for aeons to come,
In a rhapsody of passion's stress.
Away from worldly strife we'll roam.

Thy soft arms about me entwine.
Kiss me soft and sweet.
Make me know thou art mine,
A lover's glance I do entreat.
Your slender body made for mine,
So small and dear to me.
Our love that was divine—
Come back to me, my plea.

Tell me not that all is o'er,
That such things cannot be.
That our passion is no more,
And I am once again set free.

I beg you be mine, forever and a day.
To love me as I have said.
If I may not be thine, I pray ...
I would rather now be ... dead!
