So, ere the first pale flush of day appear'd,
She thro' that darksome forest wanly crept;
An old retainer whom her lord revered
Went with her, while the drowsy hamlet slept;
And when that lowly hermitage they near'd,
All tremblingly she thwart the threshold stept—
Where lo! before the altar, mute and still,
Beauty than marble lovelier and more chill!
