TWO MARYS, by VIVIAN YEISER First Line: I wonder if mary, heavy with child Last Line: Two marys shadowed by a cross. Alternate Author Name(s): Laramore, Mrs. Robert Eugene Subject(s): Children; Childhood | ||||||||
I wonder if Mary, heavy with Child, Counted her stitches and softly smiled At the feel of wool that would keep Him warm, As she knitted a sleeve for a baby's arm; Knitted and counted, woman-wise, And looking up to meet the skies, Saw camels trudge across the sand Loaded with jeweled contraband. I know a Mary who's knitting for An unborn child where the steady roar Of a China Clipper against the sun Brings the scene to the present one. And never a king with gifts of myrrh Will kneel at the shabby feet of her; And never a star will lend its flame To halo a son without a name. And yet I feel, because of Him; That other Mary in the dim Cathedral of a manger bore, The world will have compassion for This little one whose Christmas cry Will mingle with the roar of high, White planes that winter clouds emboss ...
