I had a dream the other night, And in the distance, framed in light, A lowly stable did I see Where castle of royalty should be; And a tiny baby snuggled warm In the loving curve of a mother's arm, And near by, adoring, there knelt three men; So I knew the babe was the Christ Child then. The scene changed, and outlined 'gainst the sky I saw three crosses raised on high; Two held representatives of Life's bitter dross, With the Hope of the world on the middle cross; And 'bove Him who hung in second place, With unspeakable anguish on His face, And crown of thorns to mock and bruise, I read the inscription "The King of the Jews." That scene faded, and in its place A tomb's outline did I then trace; And as my eyes pierced the misty air I noticed that the tomb was bare. A man appeared robed in dazzling white, Triumphant and holy in the dawning light; Forgotten Golgotha, the anguish, and scorn, I knew 'twas my Saviour on Easter Morn. I awoke, and as I opened my eyes Over the hill stole the pink sunrise, And my thoughts lingered on the strange dream, As I vaguely wondered what did it mean. Christ's birth must mean joy, the Crucifixion, pain; The Resurrection, triumph o'er death we attain; And I breathed a prayer of thanksgiving and praise For the lowly Nazarene of ancient days. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...VARIATIONS: 14 by CONRAD AIKEN VARIATIONS: 18 by CONRAD AIKEN LIVE IT THROUGH by DAVID IGNATOW A DREAM OF GAMES by JOSEPHINE JACOBSEN THE DREAM OF WAKING by RANDALL JARRELL APOLOGY FOR BAD DREAMS by ROBINSON JEFFERS GIVE YOUR WISH LIGHT by ROBINSON JEFFERS |
