Who have trod life's path to the evening dew —
And the solemn dark of the closing night —
If we only knew!
If we only knew, on the waking morn,
Where the broad path leads, where the roses strew,
Or the rocky road and the piercing thorn —
If we only knew!
If we only knew't were weal or woe,
If't were joy or pain in the parting view
Of the things that are, as the soul takes flight —
If we only knew!
