For some are false, -- the Empire and the Crown;
One hope, -- speak it no more, O Heart -- Renown!
How long will tongues shout to the skies thy name,
And hearts of Empire at thy word bow down?

Yet in your depth, O Sould, be true to me,
And one come after in the years may see
The hand no more, yet read the page anew,
And ever breathe, "Here is sublimity!"

How shall a wanderer salute the morn,
Or weary caravans with tread forlorn
Gaze on the dunes afar beneath yon Moon,
Nor know that each unto his hour is born?

For should some voice hereafter call my name
From out the high hills where as one we came,
Shall it awake the echoes of the years
To find but ashes from the dead fire's flame?

And should an echo of my tongue be stirred
From out these gardens where it once was heard,
Ah, would it not speak as it one day spoke,
When heart searched heart, nor Moon nor star demurred?

Ah yes, the night winds to the mem'ries sigh,
For through dim years of old the heart can cry:
Dear one, I loved thee long ago, and years
Have come and gone, yet, Love, you cannot die!

Yet falls the Moonlight on the faded scene,
And heart can call across the years between:
Dear one, I loved thee long ago, ah yes,
Years come and go, and yet thou art serene!

Stars gleam yet through the whisp'ring trees of old,
And in their splendor, Love, grow dim nor cold:
Ah yes, dear one, I loved thee long ago, --
And shall through all the ages yet unscrolled!
