SEA IS KIND (THE NYMPHS), by             Poem Explanation         Poet's Biography
First Line: Yes, I will stop and talk
Alternate Author Name(s): Moore, T. Sturge

We may call ourselves
Children of Ocean;
Yet we know not whence we come,
Nor whither we go,
Nor what we are.
We may sing the praise
Of our mother's grace;
But she makes no answer,
Nor hears our voice.
We may dive beneath
Her billowy robe,
And she may smile,
And give us a coral bower;
But still we know not
What we are,
Or why we are here.
We may watch the sun,
As he sets in the sea,
And see the colours change,
And the light fade away;
But we know not why
This should be so,
Or what it all means.
We may dance on the sands,
And sing to the waves;
But we know not
What is the song we sing,
Or what the waves
Would say to us.
We may live in the world,
And take our part;
But still we know not
What is the world,
Or what is our part.
But this we know,
That our mother is kind;
That she feeds us with beauty,
And fills our hearts with joy;
That she gives us her treasures,
Her pearls and her gold;
That she gives us her love,
Her calm and her strength.
And this we know,
That her wisdom is deep;
That she teaches us patience,
And faith, and trust;
That she teaches us courage,
And hope, and love.
And this we know,
That she leads us to God;
That she shows us the way
To the land of the blessed;
That she brings us to heaven,
The home of the gods.
And this we know,
That she is our mother;
That she loves us,
And cares for us,
And watches over us.
