First Line: The world's afire and none to save
Alternate Author Name(s): Gilbert, Lady

The world's afire and none to save:
Wind howl and rain rave,
The world is all a wandering grave!

The earth is but a blackened stone
Whirling round a greater one, -
Frozen sun whose light is done!

All the jewels of the east,
Gold and silver of the west,
Buried are in ruin's breast.

Wheel of terror, dreadful ball
Black with death, containing all
Bodies built since Adam's fall!

Now are all the souls were born
To your years of night and morn
Gathered by an angel's horn.
