PRIDE by GEORGIA DOUGLAS JOHNSON

Poet Analysis

First Line: TO PRIDE, UPON ITS ALTAR, WHAT PRICELESS OFFERINGS WE BRING
Last Line: WE STRIVE TO STILL THE HEART'S LOW CRIES.
Subject(s): PRIDE; SELF-ESTEEM; SELF-RESPECT;

To Pride, upon its altar, what priceless offerings we bring,
The one thing needful—fondest hopes, the cup of fragile joy,
The price of all the world—it's core, fanatically we give
To satisfy an inward lift—a sloganed, formal pose
Sheathed in the mantle of disguise,
We strive to still the heart's low cries.
