NO MASTER in mendaciousness, no keen deceiver I;
I never know when any one is telling me a lie;
The clumsiest of untruthful men I never can suspect,
And flaws in simple honesty are things I don't detect.

When someone says: "I'll pay it back in just a day or two."
I never get the notion it's a thing he will not do;
And when a reader tells me she is Mad about My Stuff,
I take her word as gospel, never knowing it is guff.

But though I may be credulous and easy and unwise,
I know the utterest untruth, the leader of the lies;
I know a man is lying, when, considerably cut,
He says: "I like a joke as well as anybody, but—"
