THE BREEZE by AL-HUSRI

First Line: I BREATHED THE BLOWING BREEZE
Last Line: THE EMBERS, TILL THEY GLOW.

I breathed the blowing breeze
That haply it might ease
My pains, and bring to me
A fragrant air from thee.

Alas, it roused instead
Love's ardour from the dead,
And published far and wide
Love's secret I would hide.

For when fresh winds suspire
O'er an extinguished fire,
They kindle as they blow
The embers, till they glow.
