THE LETTER by MUHAMMAD AL-MU'TAMID II

First Line: I WROTE, AND IN MY HEART WAS BURNING
Last Line: THE DEW UPON THE WAKING ROSE.

I wrote, and in my heart was burning
The grief of parting, and that yearning
They only realise
Who lose eternal paradise.

My pen no single letter traced,
But that my tears as swiftly raced
To write upon my cheek
The words my anguished heart would speak.

But for the quest of glory high
My lovesick heart were lief to fly
To thee this hour, as flows
The dew upon the waking rose.
