PRAYER FOR A BOY WITH A KITE by DOROTHY P. ALBAUGH

First Line: IF HE COULD ONLY STAY A LITTLE BOY
Last Line: AMONG THE MISSING IS A DREADFUL THING.
Subject(s): STARS;

If he could only stay a little boy
To whom the sky is but a place for kites
And winging birds not men, destruction-bound.
Dear God, please keep him safely on the ground.

What is he thinking when he looks away
Into the blue? I want his dreams to reach
Vast heights, but not his body, God. So far
He has seen nothing falling but a star.

He knows his precious kite can only soar
The cord-length of the spool within his hands.
But war departments cannot hold a string.
Among the Missing is a dreadful thing.
