IN THE HOSPITAL by PATRICK JOHN MCALISTER ANDERSON

Poet Analysis

First Line: THE WHITE GOWNED DOCTOR HOLDS THE CHARMING ARM
Last Line: AND THE PATIENT RUSHES ON IN HIS TWO-ARMED DREAM.
Subject(s): AMPUTEES; HOSPITALS;

The white gowned doctor holds the charming arm,
a cut-down blossoming bough in a vase of tears:
soundless it blows in the doctor's eyes
as he peels off his gloves, and sadly goes out of the room—
under her mask the young nurse sighs
and the patient rushes on in his two-armed dream.
