AMPHIPOLIS by ANTIPATER OF THESSALONICA

First Line: ON STRYMON BUILT AND HELLESPONTUS WIDE
Last Line: ART AS A RAG OF PURPLE, FLUNG ON EITHER SHORE.

ON Strymon built and Hellespontus wide
Amphipolis, Edonian Phyllis' mound!
The wrecks of Dian's temple still abide;
The waters run that armies fought around;
But thou, for whom Athenians strove so sore
Art as a rag of purple, flung on either shore.
