GRIEF-SONG by FRANCES BARBER

First Line: WEAVE ME A GORGEOUS GARLAND
Last Line: PAST REACH OF CIRCUMSTANCE!
Subject(s): GRIEF; SORROW; SADNESS;

Weave me a gorgeous garland
Plaited with ferns and leaves,
Twining earth's gayer blossoms;
Only the spirit grieves!

Lips should continue singing
Songs which have always borne
Voices to exultation; --
Why should mere voices mourn?

Mind may with feet and body
Tune to a fervid dance,
Rhythmic beyond its music,
Past reach of circumstance!
