WANTS by BESS EUDORA BEARD

First Line: I WANT A DOOR-STEP, HEARTH-STONE AND A ROOF-TREE
Last Line: TO EAT MY COOKIES AND TO SHAKE MY MOPSTICK AT.
Subject(s): LIKES & DISLIKES;

I want a door-step, hearth-stone and a roof-tree;
I want a jar set high upon a shelf;
I want it filled to brim and overflowing
With toothsome goodies fit for childish pelf.

I want a green vine on my window twining;
I want a hollyhock beside my door;
I want a mop to keep my hearth-stone shining,
And wipe small, muddy footprints from my floor.

I think all these would make me very happy,
And yet, I want much more than all of that --
A little bright-eyed, freckled, red-cheeked grandchild
To eat my cookies and to shake my mopstick at.
