Today in June, rose-burdened June With mellow sun and cool deep shade, A cricket chirred its wistful tune And in my heart an ache was made As old as Buddha, that will not pass But moves me as the wind the grass. These timeless symbols that environ me, The sun's thin gold, the whispering tree Whose quivering shadows fall Upon the floor, the plastered wall, Bring vagrant memories I have known In Babylon or ancient Rome. Only because a cricket called, In long June grass the sunlight palled; And set me thinking thoughts as old As China's wall or Sheba's gold. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...RHYMES OF THE DAY by GEORGE SANTAYANA HUFFMAN'S PHOTOGRAPH OF THE GRAVES OF THE UNKNOWN AT LITTLE BIGHORN by KAREN SWENSON ADDRESS TO A HAGGIS by ROBERT BURNS THE TUFT OF KELP by HERMAN MELVILLE THE HOUSE OF LIFE: 78.
