CONFLICT by ALICE GILL BENTON

First Line: FORBIDDEN WINE. IT GLOWS AND GLISTENS THERE
Last Line: FOR WINE AND SONG.

Forbidden wine. It glows and glistens there,
A tempting thing.
One draught of it might bring a snow-bound soul
Eternal spring.

Surely a Spartan's blood is in my veins,
Turning them cold.
Yet, in my soul, a mad Bohemian spark burns
Centuries old.

So, in the wake of temperate ancestry,
Steadfast and strong.
I take the water but, alas, I sigh
For wine and song.
