FORMALITY AND THE SOUL: 2. JAMES MACNEIL WHISTLER by KARL W. BIGELOW

First Line: NIGHT- / A SILVER MOONBEAM ON A GOLDEN STRAND
Last Line: FLITTING THRU THE NIGHT.
Subject(s): HUMANITY; WHISTLER, JAMES ABBOTT (1834-1903);

Night—
A silver moonbeam on a golden strand.
Black ocean—
An ocean, undulating and black.
A gray dawn.

The souls of men—
Some white, some gray, some black,
All souls of men—
Flitting about in the black darkness of the night.

Humanity—
Deep-rooted kindliness.
A something snatching—
Always snatching at the heart-strings,
Snatching and appealing.

Souls—
Flitting thru the night.
