In a remote, green recess of the forest, Lies a still, deep pool Whose emerald depths Mirror cloud shadows across the moon, Or prove an inland sea For fairy boats, the russet leaves Of a tall, proud oak. Wild eyes have looked into This selfsame pool. Soft, padded feet have paused Beside its depths Or perchance a deer whose dainty hoofs Have hither strayed, To quench her thirst just at the dawn, When still, gray shadows flee Before the coming day, Or in the deepest, midnight darkness She quietly stole here to refresh herself, From the deep, green depths Of Nature's cup, the forest pool. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...AN ORDER FOR A PICTURE by ALICE CARY THE ROLLING ENGLISH ROAD by GILBERT KEITH CHESTERTON THE MAD GARDENER'S SONG by CHARLES LUTWIDGE DODGSON UNDER THE VIOLETS by OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES SONNET: 9 by WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE A DREAM OF FAIR WOMEN by ALFRED TENNYSON |
