FLOWER DAY by HARRY RANDOLPH BLYTHE

First Line: ON FLOWER DAY THE GARDENS CAME
Last Line: ON FLOWER DAY.
Subject(s): CITIES; POVERTY; URBAN LIFE;

ON Flower Day the gardens came
In close, baked city streets to bloom,
Dark alleys drank the sweet perfume;
The roses reddened many a room —
On Flower Day.

Unnumbered children without name
Were cheered and charmed by fragrant flowers
Fresh from the unknown garden bowers --
Ay! there was balm for countless hours —
On Flower Day.

Love's spark was fanned into a flame,
The city paused its sordid greed,
The latent God in man gave heed
Unto a poor child's soulful need —
On Flower Day.
