WHY? by CHARLOTTE A. BRADSHAW

First Line: CHILL FALL NIGHTS WITH A HARVEST MOON -
Last Line: AND I SHALL QUITE FORGET YOU -- SOON.
Subject(s): ABSENCE; MEMORY; SEPARATION; ISOLATION;

Chill fall nights with a harvest moon --
Do you hear the call of the loon?
The heavy smells of ripened grain
And of grapes on the vine remain --
But you -- why did you go away?
Why? And why do I wait, you say?
Such nights pass -- and the harvest moon, --
And I shall quite forget you -- soon.
