THE WINDOW by ELLA BRODY

First Line: EVEN THE CLUMP OF SOIL ON COFFIN LID
Last Line: AND COULD NOT. THEN SHE YIELDED HIM TO DEATH.
Subject(s): PAIN; SUFFERING; MISERY;

Even the clump of soil on coffin lid
Did not bespeak finality to her.
Her mind, beneath its false acceptance, hid
The thought that he would presently bestir

His quiet limbs. In such wise she beguiled
Her heart, nor bound too great a pain in breath
Till once she tried to think how he had smiled,
And could not. Then she yielded him to death.
