THE WIND CALLS by EDWIN M. CASE

First Line: WIND-RIDING CLOUDS, NOW FLYING OUT OF SIGHT
Last Line: WHERE SPIRIT BREAKING CLOSE CONFINES WILL GO.
Subject(s): WIND;

Wind-riding clouds, now flying out of sight,
Trail back an urge like that from open sea;
Sheer distance and a wind in endless flight
Outlive stray dreams devising what could be;
Wide-opened way which leads to such expanse
That dormant powers may come into their best,
Renewing heart which broke of fitful chance --
Full-blooming that a modish rule suppressed.
And this unrest which came to me half-known,
Leans to the sweeping rush of wind, resigned
Like pliant stems of alder trees half-grown;
And then some awesome Presence -- not defined,
Repels my reaching towards the veil, to know
Where spirit breaking close confines will go.
