SONNET: EUROPE by JOHN CHALK CLARIS

First Line: EUROPE REJOICE! THE UPRISING SOUTH AWAKES
Last Line: SWEPT DARKLY DOWN TIME'S UNRETURNING STREAM.
Subject(s): EUROPE;

XIV.

EUROPE rejoice! the uprising South awakes
From her inglorious slumber: in her veins
A pulse long lost is throbbing, and her chains
Indignant from each sun-bright clime she shakes;
To her proud shout the far North answer makes;
Germania her dull tyranny disdains:
Her call is heard o'er hyperborean plains,
And on his blood-stained throne the imperial despot quakes!
A mightier hour rolls on; the orient beam
Of a new morn of intellectual light
Is dawning, man's o'erclouded soul to clear;
And like the phantoms of a feverish night
Dungeons and crowns and creeds shall disappear,
Swept darkly down Time's unreturning stream.
