EDWIN MARKHAM by MARIANNE CLARKE

First Line: HOW EDWIN MARKHAM'S WISE FAR-REACHING THOUGHT
Last Line: HIS SHACKLES FALL IN FIELD OR STREET OR MINES.
Subject(s): MARKHAM, EDWIN (1852-1940);

How Edwin Markham's wise far-reaching thought
Illuminates the day and plants new seed
Assisting men to corrolate, to heed
The keynote principles that Jesus wrought.
New trinity, his heart-felt words have brought:
Bread ... beauty ... brotherhood, a forward creed;
Real poetry! The light of daily need
Uplifting good the creeping ages sought

His genius framed the challenge, all in tune
Above the voice of time in present lines:
To lift the yoke of toil and grant the boon
United art and literature defines;
A Millet paints the man and, late or soon
His shackles fall in field or street or mines.
