MOAN ON THE PRARIE by MARY F. COCHRANE

First Line: O GOD, I WORK AND WATCH HERE ALL DAY LONG
Last Line: HARD STICKS BY NOON -- DEATH'S BONES, COME NIGHT!
Subject(s): DESPAIR;

O God, I work and watch here all day long,
My tears no sooner fallen than dried quite
By air that sears. O steely gray at dawn,
O yellow heat by noon -- brass glare, come night!

God, now I sit and listen all day long.
I hear, with tearless eyes turned from the light,
I hear the planting, rustling dry at dawn,
Hard sticks by noon -- death's bones, come night!
