Within this valley of eternal sleep Where, through the hours a gentle hush enfolds All thought, and sombre circling pine-trees keep Dark vigil, this bronze hooded figure holds A sense of changeless calm and far release. This chiseled strength stands guardian for her Who sleeps there through long years of lasting peace Which no rude worldliness can break or stir. This is not sculpturing of futile grief, It is a carven symbol of the soul Triumphant over life, so fleet and brief, Where all are led toward Death which points a goal Too mystical for mortal eyes to see Where spirit enters Immortality. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...FALSE POETS AND TRUE; TO WORDSWORTH by THOMAS HOOD ULTIMA THULE: THE TIDE RISES by HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW HUDSON RIVER ANTHOLOGY by FRANKLIN PIERCE ADAMS VERSES DESIGNED TO BE SENT TO MR.
