BRIEF PORTRAIT by MARGARET CUNNINGHAM

First Line: GAY AS A GARDEN ARE HER NEWEST SUMMER DRESSES
Last Line: HE CANNOT SEE HER FACE AS PAIN HAS TRACED IT NOW.)
Subject(s): MEMORY;

Gay as a garden are her newest summer dresses
And high-heeled fragile slippers line her closet floor;
(Tonight her heart will pass unnoticed for her fashion,
The flippant shoes will dance as lightly as before.)

But for a moment now she leans before her mirror,
And deftly sets in place a soft curl at her brow;
(So short a time has passed and yet if he remembers
He cannot see her face as pain has traced it now.)
