AN ORCHID by ROUTLEDGE CURRY

First Line: THE OLD MAHOGANY FIREPLACE
Last Line: TO A POINT.
Subject(s): FLOWERS; GARDENS & GARDENING; NATURE; ORCHIDS; SPRING;

The old mahogany fireplace
Had an ample cloth of dark green velvet
Over its mantlepiece.

On it
I placed a slender silver vase,
And filled it with a solitary orchid
Of rare beauty.

The peacock flower
Possessed a soft shy face,
And it rolled quaint scarlet kisses
To me
Down curious paths of lavender and gold,
Trailing its eager, graceful petals
To a point.
