LIGHT AND DARKNESS (2) by WILLIAM HENRY DAVIES

Poet Analysis

First Line: THOUGH I SIT BROODING HERE, WITH MY EYES CLOSED
Last Line: TO SEE HER BODY IN THE LIGHT AT ALL.
Subject(s): ABSENCE; LOVE; SEPARATION; ISOLATION;

Though I sit brooding here, with my eyes closed,
Yet have I seen the light go suddenly;
Though I had shut them fast, to see no light,
A sudden wave of darkness, without warning,
Broke on their trembling lids, and forced my sight.

So when my Love has gone out quietly,
And left me here alone, all lost in dreams,
I see the shadow of her absence fall
Across my vision, that had been too blind
To see her body in the light at all.
