RICH COMPANIONS by WILLIAM HENRY DAVIES

Poet Analysis

First Line: WHILE I HAVE THESE TWO RICH COMPANIONS LEFT
Last Line: CAN AGE FIND ANY RICHER FRIENDS THAN THESE?
Subject(s): AGING; YOUTH;

While I have these two rich companions left,
Wine for my Body, Music for my Mind —
Shall I complain that Life has lost its youth,
And say that Fate is cruel and unkind?

Come, then, let Wine and Music help each other;
That when my Wine has closed both eye and ear,
I'll hear in dreams a Music more divine,
Refined by something more than common air.

Fill up the glass and turn the small round knob —
Bring in those sweet far-travelled melodies:
Wine for my Body, Music for my Mind —
Can Age find any richer friends than these?
