SOUND AND LIGHT by WILLIAM HENRY DAVIES

Poet Analysis

First Line: WHEN I STAND HERE ALONE AT NIGHT
Last Line: A CHAPEL FOR OUR GOD?
Subject(s): SILENCE;

When I stand here alone at night,
And see but nothing hear –
The silence of so many stars
Is almost pain to bear.

Yet if I heard one creak in Heaven,
One little break or move –
What would become of Faith and Hope,
And of the Gods we love?

If but one star cried out at night,
To burst like any pod –
Where shall we find, in all the Heavens,
A chapel for our God?
