THE POOR by WILLIAM HENRY DAVIES

Poet Analysis

First Line: GIVE THEM YOUR SILVER, LET THE POOR
Last Line: WORTH TWICE THEIR WEIGHT IN GOLD?
Subject(s): DEPRESSIONS, ECONOMIC; POVERTY; RECESSIONS;

Give them your silver, let the poor
Put on a braver show;
Let not their cold and sullen looks
Depress the world with woe.

But to the poor who laugh and sing,
Nor look depressed nor cold –
What can we give to these sweet souls,
Worth twice their weight in gold?
