THE RIVER SEVERN by WILLIAM HENRY DAVIES

Poet Analysis

First Line: THIS IS THE MORNING BRIGHT AND CLEAR
Last Line: TO SEARCH HIS FACE AND FIND A SHADOW.
Subject(s): SEVERN (RIVER), ENGLAND;

This is the morning bright and clear,
To stand on top of Christchurch Hill;
We'll see the Severn, looking down,
In all his silver beauty, Love –
Where he lies basking in the sun.

My lovely Severn shines as bright
As any moon on trucks of coal,
Or sun above our greenest meadow;
Till I again defy the world
To search his face and find a shadow.
