RETURN TO EARTH by INA DRAPER DEFOE

First Line: I AM THE COOL, GREEN EARTH WHERE LOVERS LIE
Last Line: TO SUCKLE ONCE AND THEN RETURN TO ME.
Subject(s): FIELDS; PASTURES; MEADOWS; LEAS;

I

I am the cool, green earth where lovers lie.
No mother could be kinder than am I.

Their slim, young bodies merging for a breath
Will never know that such is part of death.

That life has lured them to this little hour
To brand their souls with pain's bright, passion flower.

They come to me and lie upon my heart,
And I am silent, I have done my part.

II

I am the deep, dark earth where pulsing life
Is eager for the pageantry of strife.

Where worm and seed alike mature and spring
Upon my breast prepared to live and sing.

I let them go. It is their destiny
To suckle once and then return to me.
