Without the world was beautiful With colors bright and gay, While fragrant from the meadows came The scent of new-mown hay. I heard the tinkle of a bell From somewhere far away; My pillow never was so soft As on that summer day. The birds sang sweetly in the trees A happy roundelay; And, like Love's kisses, came the touch Of breezes soft at play Wafting perfume and pleasant sounds From near and from afar; The song of birds, the scent of flowers, Past casement sash ajar.
