ON A NEW CHURCH by ROWLAND EYLES EGERTON-WARBURTON

First Line: A SHALLOW CHANCEL, SCARCE SIX FEET BY TEN
Last Line: THE WORLD'S DEVOTION BY THE CHANCEL SPAN.
Subject(s): CHRISTIANITY; CHURCHES; RELIGION; CATHEDRALS; THEOLOGY;

A SHALLOW chancel, scarce six feet by ten,
Which rail'd and painted forms a decent pen;
A lofty spire, which bears its glittering vane
Some hundred feet exalted from the plain;
Say, was this would-be Christian elevation
Built for devotion or for ostentation?
By the tall spire we gauge the pride of man,
The world's devotion by the chancel span.
