THOMAS JANVIER by JOHN HUSTON FINLEY

First Line: JANVIER OF EBON BARB AND MIGHTY FRAME
Last Line: WHO IN THE CROW'S NEST SAT TO COOL HIS BROTH.
Subject(s): JANVIER, THOMAS (1849-1913); WRITING & WRITERS;

Janvier of Ebon barb and mighty frame
Who lived up to the pen name "Iv'ry Black,"
Yet dwelt he in no tower of ivory.
For years he visited Provence and knew
Mistral and Felix Gras. I found him once
In Avignon, and then in Mexico.
And once at sea the dolphins sank our boat
And only one escaped: the canny cook
Who in the crow's nest sat to cool his broth.
