ELEPHANT by HORTENSE KING FLEXNER

First Line: A PREHISTORIC BOULDER
Last Line: WALKS IN THE CIRCUS PARADE.
Subject(s): ANIMALS; CIRCUS; ELEPHANTS;

A prehistoric boulder,
Lying a million years
In mud and clay,
Moves strangely forward.
A gray and ancient mound,
Whose furrowed sides
Heave—for the first time—
Walks in the circus parade.
