Dark grey clouds massed themselves Into martial battalions And scudded angrily across the sky. A little child peered out Through an open window To watch the awesome pageant. Suddenly, a long spiral flash of lightning Shot out from beneath the Flitting dome of darkness, Leaving in its wake A mighty burst of thunder Which reverberated Through a thousand hidden caverns And shook the earth. The child, afraid, Snatched down the window-blind. The night wept. A million tiny worlds Scampered out from its swollen eyelids And dashed themselves against the earth, Spilling a flood of colorless blood Upon the ground. The music of the falling tears Became a lullaby: The child slept; the night smiled. Angry clouds rushed away To hide themselves From the cheerful glances Of a thousand twinkling, dancing eyes.
