WHEN FIRST YOU CAME by CAROLINE KLINGENSMITH GARDNER

First Line: WHEN FIRST YOU CAME, IT WAS AS IF A BREEZE
Last Line: SO FAIR THE MOOD YOU LEFT, WHEN FIRST YOU CAME.
Subject(s): WELLESLEY COLLEGE;

WHEN first you came, it was as if a breeze,
A gentle summer breeze, had blown my hair;
A summer rain, it seemed, had cooled the air
And at the gate the tall magnolia trees
Were stirred as by some talisman, some name;
Your presence lingered after like a dream --
As dew-washed petals in the morning gleam,
So fair the mood you left, when first you came.
