THE MESSAGE by EDWARD HARRIS GOODMAN

First Line: WHAT IS THE MESSAGE THAT IN TIME OF SPRING
Last Line: STIRS US AND THEM AND LIVES IN EVERYTHING.
Subject(s): LOVE;

What is the message that in time of Spring
Within the earth each root receives? What power
Is given eternally to everything
That grows, to stir, to swell, to bud, to flower?
What is the message birds receive, to make
Them North or South with one accord take flight,
And safety of their present ease forsake
For perilous pilgrimage through blackest night?
Perhaps it's what @3we@1 feel at Christmas-tide ...
That aching-sweet desire, that ceaseless surge
Of unstilled longing just to be beside
All those we dearly love. Yes! Love's the urge
That makes the flowers bloom and birds take wing!
Stirs us and them and lives in everything.
