LITTLE THINGS by GERTRUDE GORE

First Line: I HAD ALMOST FORGOTTEN YOU WERE GONE
Last Line: LIKE PITY WE KNEW WATCHING A PETAL FALL.
Subject(s): ABSENCE; GRIEF; SEPARATION; ISOLATION; SORROW; SADNESS;

I had almost forgotten you were gone,
And then my heart remembered little things
Like winter twilight pressing gently on
A hillside, or the breath wisteria brings.
And then some lovely word you used to say
Will call to mind a time we were together
When all the world was tremulous and gay
And our young hearts were lighter than the heather.

I had almost forgotten how my grief
At losing you had shattered all desire,
But now the wiser years have brought relief
And hung the moon and stars a trifle higher.
Only the little things I now recall
Like pity we knew watching a petal fall.
