I had almost forgotten you were gone, And then my heart remembered little things Like winter twilight pressing gently on A hillside, or the breath wisteria brings. And then some lovely word you used to say Will call to mind a time we were together When all the world was tremulous and gay And our young hearts were lighter than the heather. I had almost forgotten how my grief At losing you had shattered all desire, But now the wiser years have brought relief And hung the moon and stars a trifle higher. Only the little things I now recall Like pity we knew watching a petal fall. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...APOLOGIA PRO POEMATE MEO by WILFRED OWEN THE FIFTEEN ACRES by JAMES STEPHENS MASSACHUSETTS TO VIRGINIA by JOHN GREENLEAF WHITTIER THE OLD BURYING-GROUND by JOHN GREENLEAF WHITTIER THE EVENING CLOUD by JOHN WILSON (1785-1854) TO SLEEP, WHEN SICK OF A FEVER by PHILIP AYRES |
